Set Rules, Monitor Driving and Enforce Consequence

The Provisional License phase is often the most challenging for both teens and parents. While teens gain new freedoms, parents face new concerns, requiring firm yet supportive guidance. The first 6-12 months of licensure pose the highest risk for accidents or traffic violations due to teens’ underdeveloped ability to anticipate consequences.

Parental Responsibility: Parents must determine when their teen is truly ready to drive, beyond just meeting state requirements. A structured approach combining progressive privileges with clear consequences helps reinforce responsible driving habits. Many parents find that a written driving agreement helps establish expectations.

Basic Driving Rules for Teens:

  1. Always wear a seatbelt and require passengers to do the same
  2. Never drive under the influenc
  3. Inform parents of their destination and expected return time
  4. Call if running late
  5. Follow speed limits and traffic laws
  6. Avoid aggressive driving, tailgating, or drowsy driving
  7. Stay focused—no cell phone use or other distractions

Enforcing Consequences: Rule violations should lead to clear penalties like stricter curfews, loss of driving privileges, or fines. Parents must enforce rules consistently and discuss driving experiences to address mistakes.
Passenger Safety & Peer Influence: Teens should also be aware of the risks of riding with inexperienced peers. Encourage them to prioritize safety and never hesitate to call for a ride if they feel unsafe.
